It depends on the customer needs to the end-user and on the end-user’s skill-set. In our business today, we sell custom products that fit our customers’ needs.
Why do you want me to help you build and/or sell something?
If you can build your product and keep up with customer feedback, that’s a great sign that you could do some amazing work. When you’re working on a really complex product, it often helps to work as a developer, especially if you have the resources to do that.
Where do I start?
To build, to market your product, or both, all of the above is a major part of what has been my path so far. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you’re not doing the research, and that’s okay. It’s helpful for everyone involved in your company’s success – the customer, vendors, employees, and of course you yourself! We talk about it in our course “Developing A Service” in the section on “What to Read First.”
Once you’re getting back to basics, make the decision on what you want to build or market first. If this is your first project, it might help to create a small list of product functions, ideas to work on during the day, etc. When your product starts to take shape, you can move onto research. What are your current goals? What might you build right now? This is critical to understand as it will help you get a feel for what you’re up against.
What are we building?
The first thing you should do now is choose a product and a product team, and a process it will follow. We use Product Hunt to organize our product work.
Product Hunt uses a Google+ community to share links and product descriptions.
Our goal today is to show you how to create a product and to help you build it.
What is a product?
A product is an idea that you want to create. If you’re really ambitious at this early stage in your career, you might start with nothing (though that’s not very ambitious at all!). Your first product should help you get a feel of what it takes to get started on something new. How much time do you have? How much money are you willing to invest in research and development? What’s your budget for marketing and education? What is the product roadmap you have in mind?
