The most likely scenario for the long-rumored Xiaomi Mi5 smartphone: a 6.1-inch handset, powered by the latest Snapdragon 821 processor from Qualcomm, with an 8-megapixel camera on the back. And that’s if Xiaomi wants to go all in, and go all in right this second.
A source with direct knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be named, says that Xiaomi intends to launch the Mi5 in the coming months, possibly as early as August. The Mi5 will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 821 chipset and the smartphone is already in development, the source says.
While the Mi5 may indeed be a low-end smartphone, with the same Snapdragon 821 processor and 16-megapixel rear camera, the source indicates that Xiaomi has a wide-ranging roadmap that would include a lot of additional features. “There will be a whole range of features which will drive the price down,” this source says, indicating that the Xiaomi 6.1-inch smartphone may feature a microSD card slot, a fingerprint scanner and a fingerprint-friendly home button. The source describes the handset as “high-end” and is likely to run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
But there may also be more. The source says Xiaomi has already started talking to manufacturers about a variety of other features. “A lot of people know that Xiaomi is planning to have a very large number of features and a lot of the manufacturers want to be a part of this,” the source told The Information, adding that the company has been “warping” its development to include “all the features and specs the manufacturers think is going to be popular in China”.

The official Mi5 will not be announced as the first smartphone from Chinese e-commerce leader JD.com, but as the new entry in its existing range of Mi smartphones, sources said. The Mi5 will be available “through JD.com”, but the source did not name the online carrier. JD.com has the largest e-commerce presence in China
