The most expensive? We want to know. We want to know how many saffron products are manufactured, who purchases them, and how they spend their money.
In a recent report on the impact of imported goods on India, one of the world’s largest manufacturing nations, the Central Statistics Office showed that the number of saffron products made in India each year has declined markedly in the last 16 years. However demand for some products is increasing.
In 2004-05, the year when the Modi government was formed, there were almost 24,000 tonnes of saffron products made in India – a drop of 30 per cent since the 2004-05 season. This year, there are 1,908 tonnes of saffron products imported to India from countries like Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. In 2014-15, this number increased to 22,078 tonnes. This is almost the equivalent of all of India producing over 16,000 tonnes of saffron annually!
These numbers, however, are not necessarily indicative of any single country’s economic success and the impact their imports have on the Indian farmer.
So many saffron saffron products are exported to India
As of 2017, there are 3,057 products manufactured in India, including about 19,600 tonnes of saffron oil. About 1.7 crore tonnes of Indian production is saffron extract. India produces over 5.0 tonnes of saffron oil every day. This does not include the thousands of tonnes of imported plants.
As we know, the majority of the products sold in India come from Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which are all considered to be “dirty” for Indian use.
So in order to keep India’s total supply of “saffron products” at zero, Nepal has developed a large plant that produces 100 lakh liters of saffron oil every day by adding a kilogram of gold to every bottle. In comparison, Indian manufacturing plants require 500 lakh kms of gold.
Nepal has the world’s largest number of gold-plated plants.
This gold-plated plant, in Nalanda district, employs 2,500 people (nearly all of them women) and produces saffron oil and saffron extract. It produces a lot of the country’s imported saffron products.
India is currently the largest producer of saffron oil, so the total output of this plant is likely to
