You may have noticed that I am not talking about powdered saffron. This can be found online, from Asian wholesale shops and even well-meaning health food stores. It’s not as easy to find as one might think. The powdered variety is very easy to make, too. In fact, if it were easy to produce, I would be an expert in a very short space of time; there are millions of people that have tried this. But it isn’t; it requires the right ingredients to make it work. Here are the ingredients I use to make my own powdered saffron. If you have any of these ingredients on hand (that you might even enjoy making), please let me know so I can give you a shout out on my blog.
Here are the recipe links for saffron powder, powdered saffron, and fresh saffron. They are easy to use as well.
Saffron Powder, Spelt Powder, and Fermented Spelt Powder (in two parts) – This is also a source of saffron, but it can take some time to prepare. Use an extra-small amount.
Saffron Flour – This is what I use for homemade saffron. It is similar to saffron flour so if that is easy for you, please use it. Otherwise, you can use the flour that comes with most flours so that your homemade saffron is less sticky when it is put into the bag.
Saffron Sugar – This can be any kind of sugar. If you have time I would love it if you could use regular granulated sugar. If you have time, try white, brown, or even light brown granulated sugar.
Saffron Juice – This can be any kind of fruit juice like lime, orange, grapefruit, strawberry, papaya, apple, peaches, apricots, or more. It is good for adding color to dishes as well.
Saffron Seed Oil or Margarine – This is just like you would think of a margarine. It needs to be softened as the juice is too thick to use.
Saffron Oil – Again, it is the same thing. You still will need to heat it when you add it to the bag. You can always heat the oil yourself if you can find it as this will make it easier to remove it from the bag.
