Here are their answers, in no particular order. What Is it? Stock Photos Direct. This is my favorite of the lot. It’s fast, easy to use, and the stock photos they come with aren’t terrible by any means, so if you don’t like the site make your own. Do people like it? No. Do you use it? Yes. I wouldn’t go out on a limb and say most people do like it, but if you don’t use it, you won’t see any money. Should I keep my eye out for it? I do not consider it an essential site in any way, shape or form. It’ll do. Have you used it? Yes. Have you tried it? Yes. But this is a pretty niche area of website architecture, and not for everybody. Would I pay for one? Not often. Are they really useful? Oh, yes, they’re indispensable. And I’ve found over the years that most people don’t buy a lot to use them.
I’ve read a lot of comments here, but the best one here sums it up perfectly:
I’m trying to look into this site after the initial run-around, so I really appreciate any help you guys can provide. It’s great to see a small community of people interested in making their own stock photos.
Thanks so much for all your help! Please tell the world who you are and why you’re doing it all.
UPDATE! Another commenter who’s also done a lot of work on this, but who is also a programmer, has provided his solution to help you get your site up and running!
UPDATE #2! Also, thanks to a fan who brought this up, I’ve got some further thoughts on the problem. A blog post posted on the official site by David Dorman in 2007 discusses why you shouldn’t have a whole site dedicated to stock photos. However, it also covers the reasons for the site. Here’s the section:
You can have this web site up and running if you have an easy way to do the bulk of your work, such as Google’s free Image Search, or, if you’re in a situation where you’d rather focus on your business, you might make use of some other photo software (i.e., Google Image Search), but I would recommend that you create a separate site for this purpose. Even better: use Image Search (or your own) in conjunction with Google
