(And can this be a good thing?)
This question was on the minds of the audience at the end of the lecture. They asked a set of questions on several different topics including:
Do you have an automatic way of reading minds, or do you rely on your experiences?
How do you do this differently than other people?
Do you think if you read a lot about a person you can figure out what they want or need?
What’s the biggest problem your research has found?
The New York Times recently released a comprehensive look at the ways in which social media and other technology have transformed the way people communicate and interact with one another. One of the more compelling findings the Times found is the increased awareness some Americans have of their neighbor’s sexual orientation, the Times reported on Thursday.
But according to the Times, this awareness of sexual orientation — and especially of sexual orientation in a family — is significantly lower than it was 30 years ago.
The new research finds that in 1976, “about 12 percent of all adults said that they knew someone who was gay or lesbian.” By 1992, that number was down to 4 percent.
And by 2007, the percentage of adults who were aware of a gay or lesbian relative declined significantly. It stayed at that low in 2014, when about 8 percent of adults in the U.S. were aware of someone who felt the same way.
The research also showed that a significant proportion of Americans don’t know their own sexual orientation or family history. The study found about 25 percent of adults and 20 percent of young adults didn’t know the names of the people in their family who held similar sexual orientations.
“Although we know a lot about how people relate to and treat other people, how they act and behave toward them, we don’t yet think about how people themselves are treated,” said Thomas Campbell, one of the study’s co-authors. “We’re concerned that people will behave poorly if we just assume they’re the norm.”
