There have been reports of this problem. Some people reported it with their older violins. Other people reported that it would happen with their new violins, or with their brand new violins. This makes it sound as if there are several problems with value with brand new violins. If you were a violin maker at the time, how would you know? You’d find out. So, do we know the answer to this question. No, we don’t.
When you purchase your violins they usually come with a value guarantee. You can either buy them used, or can buy them new with a warranty. Usually, new violins will come at a higher price if the buyer has a warranty.
I just bought a new violin and I don’t have a warranty, where does it stop?
You can always ask for a free repair from your local violin shop. They will probably not be able to fix the problem immediately. Also, the repair will probably need to be done under warranty. If the violin is worth less than $600 US, and you don’t have a warranty.
You can also try your local music store. They may know one. You can also try looking in the used violin shop. There are some things you can do to help avoid the problem.
If you are willing to put up with the problem, you would be amazed how much time and money you can save by having a warranty from your violin maker or dealer. The time saved is usually on the order of five minutes.
In general, if you are not sure if your violin is worth more or less than $600 I’d consider it worth to try to find out the answer yourself. Many things can hurt value. For example, if your violin doesn’t look like it is worth anything, make sure it’s not the model or type you bought. If it has cosmetic damage that you can’t see or feel, it may not be worth as much.
Also, keep in mind that no value guarantees are 100% reliable – that is, a $1,500 value does not mean your violin is worth $1,500 (and vice versa). Some people try to work around these problems with a warranty. You may have to let the violins sit around in storage before you decide to take action.
I had my first violin in August 2009. I had the strings replaced because my repairman said my strings were too bad and should be replaced. I replaced my whole string
