I think not. As I’ve explained elsewhere, the market can fluctuate with the price of gold, especially when it is in a bull market. This means that a fine violin will never be worth its original price in my book. That said, violins are worth more today than they were 40 years ago, because, as a general rule, the more frequently the market changes, the more valuable a piece of music will be. You have to start appreciating the value of a piece of viola music for itself to reach its full and permanent potential. The violin is a marvelous, timeless instrument whose value continues to build with each passing day.
The cost of violins
A very cheap violin costs about $800 to $1,200, but a really nice piece that will last the lifetime of you and your friends is closer to $15,000 to $20,000. Many fine violins can also set a premium over other stringed instruments. The only thing to remember when buying expensive violins (especially if you’re an amateur who’s just learning) is to use eBay and other fine-looking auctions to choose violins that are not priced higher than their average sale price at auction. I’ve heard many violins sell out quickly, and violins that sell often are far more likely to command a higher price. You can also purchase violins from auction sites like eBay and Music Source, which have a “discount” section on their home pages, but you need to know if they sell out every time, which is more likely to happen. Some of the older violins that I own have sold for $10,000 or $15,000, but they haven’t been that expensive to begin with since their original prices were so low. The only thing that you want to be aware of is that a fine violin from a well-established maker can usually command a premium price that’s several times what the new stuff in that same maker’s catalog is. So it’s not impossible to find excellent violins on eBay for $800 to $1,200 or for $16,000 to $20,000.
Why I love violins
To have a great-playing violin that will last a lifetime you need to pay top dollar for your choice of size and quality. Most violins have a scale length of between 15 and 30 inches, which comes in short, medium, long and extra long. Most violins have a width of 25 to 35 inches, and most stringed instruments
