We’ve seen the latest evidence of the “new normal” for human-induced climate change: More heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere. That heat is trapping more heat, as NASA and the University of East Anglia discovered using models. However, there’s a new “normal” for global warming as well, even if it’s not exactly what you’d expect – “a new equilibrium,” a new state where the planet is warm and wet and full of life.
A “new equilibrium” may not sound like much, but the difference between the two could mean the difference between habitable Earth and a hot hellscape like Mars. And since both these models and observations confirm that we are warming and the planet is getting warmer, you’d have thought we’d be able to figure out how to work together to mitigate this.
But there isn’t really a way. What we want is less warming and therefore less warming and warmer temperatures, the best way to accomplish that being to limit emissions. But if we want to reduce greenhouse gases, which is to say, limit the intensity of global warming (in other words, cut the total amount of greenhouse gases they trap), then we can’t achieve that. There really is no compromise we’re willing to make.
That’s because the planet is rapidly melting ice caps, creating rising seas, altering the climate, and putting more salt on the oceans (which means more intense precipitation and more flooding). If we don’t reduce emissions now, the climate will continue to warm, which means there won’t be enough sea ice left to protect us from warmer temperatures. Which is the bad news we’ve known since 2009, when NASA scientists told our world that, whatever they thought about its potential importance, the melting ice “does not necessarily pose a threat to human
