The National Energy Board has ordered the Calgary-based company to reduce its emissions by an extra 20 percent over 2016 emissions by 2025, under a plan submitted to the board on Monday.
FlaminaGas Renewables Ltd. is responsible for the pollution that results from Alberta’s power plants including those in Fort McMurray. (CBC) The federal regulator has given FlaminaGas an extra one-year deadline to meet its requirements, the company announced in a statement.
“Based on our results, and given that our compliance and environmental management program is in a very nascent phase, we are pleased to have received the decision,” the company said in the statement.
FlaminaGas Renewables did not say how much it would cost to comply.
“As outlined below, the reductions would commence on the first of January 2020 and continue through mid-2020, when the program would end,” it said.
“While the reduction is a significant one, the reduction is not an additional burden on the taxpayer.”
FlaminaGas has long argued its pollution causes health problems in the area.
But the Alberta government was not impressed and launched a criminal investigation that was still ongoing as of Monday.
An Edmonton law firm filed a notice of application for an injunction on Nov. 15 asking court to declare the company in contempt of court for not fulfilling its obligations. In the meantime, the company would have to pay $1 million in penalties.
The company has said it was ordered to reduce emissions between 2.2 and 5 per cent.
FlaminaGas said its emissions have increased more than 20 per cent since 2011.
