A good friend of mine calls me pretty. It’s more of something he’d say. He makes me smile because he’s cool and doesn’t judge me. I think about what he says to me sometimes. Not all these jokes I’ve made are funny, but I’ll tell them to him, and sometimes when I do, it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard him say to me. And we joke even though we’re not friends.
When did you first realize you loved video games?
The first one we ever played were Space Invaders. I didn’t understand what it was at first. I thought the whole game was like a game and that the game was really easy. But after I played it for a while, I realized the game was really really fun and addictive. It’s the only game I still play.
That’s when you really began to enjoy video games.
Yeah. It’s funny. When you’re a kid, I was like, “Hey, I’m gonna play video games, this is way easier than reading!” but as time went on, I always thought I was just lazy.
Tell us a good story about a classic game in the making.
There’s this game called “Cars.” The developers had a really old-school look to their games. All the things they did was just vintage-looking. There were no new ideas for the car game. In fact, people were complaining about how dated they looked. So, they made it really, really dark.
But when I saw it, I was very impressed. Then I saw others making the same game, and I was just really pleased. The developers got really pissed at me because they didn’t want to put that on the computer, because it was really, really old school, but they were like, “Look at these guys making it. They know exactly what they’re doing.” It was a lot of fun.
You wrote a book in 2014 about your time at the company. How did that experience come across to you?
I loved it because it was honest, and it was true. Some people read it as a sales pitch, but everybody in Atari really loved it. So they were pretty happy with it. And my publisher, Viacom, really took the time to write it to make sure that it was exactly what it seemed to me. It was a great experience, a lot of fun.
