Home improvement grants, sometimes known as public-assistance grants, are grants issued for specific renovations. Grants are valid for one year from date of issuance, and are available for home improvement projects of up to $500,000. Grants are available for projects on federal, state and local property, primarily in urban areas. While home improvement grants can be offered to any individual, some applicants are limited due to the amount of time they need or are willing to invest to complete the project. If the grant-eligible individual lives in multiple states, each state’s housing department will determine how grant-eligible projects are awarded and distributed.
In order to apply for grants, applicants must contact their local housing department to determine what kind of grant-eligible projects are available to assist them. This form (available in English or Spanish) can be used to determine how much grant-eligible projects exist in any city or town in the United States.
