A lot of it, actually — just like I did with the cat — you just go in. You’ve been around long enough, and you know what you’re doing. Now, the challenge is to figure out how to draw a zebras in your own style that is completely unique, where they look the way you want them to, but also feel a little bit like you’re drawing a zebra.

When you’re first starting out with drawing characters, it’s tempting to work in the same basic proportions. But as you refine your skills, you’ll find that you don’t want to end up copying anyone else’s line. So how do you start to break out of the box? And why does the box keep repeating itself and keeps saying “Zebras” over and over?

We started by just sketching. We would just go into all of our sketches and just sketch and make a decision about which style I wanted them to be. So I started sketching just like the old days when I was doing my comic strips. I’d draw like three panels in a row, but with the line drawn differently so it was always at an angle and always looking very unique. Then I would do something I thought looked best on the page. Then it would be a test to see how it looked later on. We would do that and then just let the process of doing that take care of itself.

You’re probably not going to be able to keep your lines in constant motion, so you’re going to get a little bit of a learning curve there, particularly as you’re putting into practice the different lines you’ll need for different characters.

I’ve found that it starts off with making sure you know what you want to draw. What is in your heart? And then finding a way to get that in line. It’s a skill that is really, really important. I would recommend to anyone to read the whole book if they’re a beginner, because it’s not so much specific to drawing characters, but it helps you develop how to read the character in the way you intend to. It was really helpful for me at the beginning of my career. I would study the character’s movements very carefully, then when I’m sketch
